June 2009
Maria Cabaleiro (Spain) put on another impressive performance at the SPT Castellon where she earned the respect of a well known Spanish poker professional and ended up among the final 16 players. Her poker game keeps on getting better and better. This is her reflection of the event.
Day 1
The tournament begins on a Friday at 20:00 and I quickly observe the situation and start thinking to myself that there are two good players at my table and I sense that they want to eat this cake alone. Starting from the first hand of the tournament, I protected myself from the big blind with a simple J2, when I hooked the 2 in the Turn and decided that this was a good move. I announced that they should either hand over the third share of the pot, or it will not be an easy run for them.
Maria Cabaleiro keeps her cool at the table
During the first four hours of tournament play I always got a little above the average, with some games of little importance, but I am well positioned and I am winning small pots. We arrive at the fifth level blind. 150-300 and a new player is sitting at my table and a new hand soon follows. I raise two and a half blinds 800 K from UTG +2 with AQ, the new player following a call and a half path, decides from the BB to call. The Flop Q9T. The player passes, I bet half of the pot 2000K, the player, without hesitating for a second and with 25000k behind, against my 18000k at this moment makes an instant call. At this moment I give up the chance of a KJ just by the player's attitude and I think he might be holding the J. The Turn, showing an 8, the player bets 3500 without even thinking about it for a second and I automatically rule out the J because I think that with the straight flush I wouldn't bet. For this reason I consider the option of some double pairs from the Flop. The River brings a blank card that didn't really complete anything for me that hadn't existed before. The player observes his cards and at that moment puts down 6000K for me. I think that if I lose my hand I would end up keeping 7000K and I will still 'be alive' for the duration of the tournament. If I win it I will have for myself around 32000K. I observe the situation at the table and touch all my chips with the intention of paying and at that moment his eyes dropped and I already didn't doubt it and immediately Call. The player tells me A5 and I get up very happy! FLASH My queen wins and I get far above average. By this time I already know that I am running my chips well and I am having a good tournament.
An hour later I have the hand “THE TRAIN” and I pay in the blind. I have 66, Flop 752 with a two of Clubs, Paco places 1000 and I pay, the Turn 6. I pass and he passes and in The River 9 that completes the color and the straight. I place 1500 in a boat of 3000 and Paco responds to me with a raise – 5000. I sincerely think that he doesn't have any color or straight and he's trying to take the pot. I make an instant call with my threesome and take the pot. I continue to sustain my 43000K well above the average. I'm playing a good tournament and my hands are good. I kept up this level of play and I was able to end my first day of playing becoming a part of the 39 players who will play on the 2nd day. And now – To rest!
Day 2
On Saturday we started at five o'clock in the afternoon, Level 8 blind 300/600 my table is composed of good payers - Fernando Martín (ex champion of Spain), Julio Díaz (Reniegas) does not need a title or an introduction, Emilio Domínguez is a player that took the final edition of the Spanish Poker Tour and is on my left, and some others. The good thing is that I know some of them and that they have a certain image of me. I realized that every time I attacked as a means of winning the pot was more important than having AA and during many hours I play well using my chips and my knowledge about the players, in spite of not having the support of the cards. On more than one occasion, I used the re-steal as a means of obtaining pots and I defended my blinds by not taking advantage of my image. No important hands because I never showed the cards. Only on one occasion did I bid with 77 and was paid by the player on my right, with AQ s, the commons didn't help her and my 77 won the hand.
Maria Cabaleiro lines up her chips
After many hours of playing the decisive moment arrives. At level 15 the blinds are 1500/3000 and only two levels to finish the game. There are just 16 players remaining, in the big blind AK, the small blind goes up again and I am All-in, the player doesn't think and he pays JJ. I have A of Diamonds and a King of Hearts, Chema Felices has a Jack of Hearts and a Jack of Spades. Flop Q of Hearts, 5 of Spades and a 3 of Spades. The Turn and there is a 5 of Spades. The River brings a T of Diamonds.
It's been a great experience. The most motivating thing of the tournament was on Sunday when we were about to start the final table, a great player, known and respected by everyone in Spain told me that he had really enjoyed my game of poker. He said that 'poker life' was very long and that in the last tournament I was very close and that this indicated that the quality of my game was high and to continue on this way! So I then enrolled in the 'FUN EVENT' on Sunday with 53 players and ended up sitting at a tough table in the finals. I came in third and returned home. We'll meet again in the next tournament “CEP MALAGA”.
Titan Poker congratulates you on an excellent performance and thanks you for a great tournament. See you at the next one!
